OPETH AND MASTODON TOUR 2021
On the evening of November 30th, 2021 Opeth, Mastodon, and Zeal & Ardor performed at the Mesa Amphitheater in Mesa, Arizona. I was looking forward to this show because I had not seen Opeth and Mastodon since the mid/late 2000s, and of course, I was curious to see the opening band, Zeal and Ardor play as well.
The first band to perform was Zeal and Ardor which had a very melodic sound mixed with black metal. I enjoyed their performance and would watch them again in the future if the opportunity comes. I would recommend people to give them a chance and listen to them. Since then I have been listening to them and been liking all their music.
Mastodon was the second band to perform, and I had not seen them since they played at the Rockstar Mayhem Festival in 2013. They just released their eighth studio album called “Hushed and Grim”, which at the time of them performing I had not listened, to but did check it out after. they opened their set with “Pain With An Anchor”, which was on their latest album and I was impressed by this new song. They did play a few new songs from their new album, but also played some older stuff which was awesome to hear. Other notable songs they played were “Megalodon”, “The Czar”, “Blade Catcher”, and of course they closed their set with “Blood and Thunder”, which got the crowd roaring and also put a smile on my face because I love that song as well. One thing I did notice was that a lot of people did leave after their performance, and did not stay to watch Opeth.
Finally, it was time for the mighty Opeth to take the stage, and I was extremely excited to see them perform again. The last time I saw them in concert was in October 2005 at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California. I had kept up with all their music but had not seen them since that time. I was hoping they played anything from their album “Ghost Reveries”, which is my favorite album followed by “Blackwater Park”. They opened their show with “Hjartat Vet Vad Handen Gor”, taken from their latest album “In Cauda Venenum”. Other notable songs they played were “Demo Of The Fall”, “Cusp Of Eternity”, “The Drapery Falls”, “Windowpane” and they closed their show with “Deliverance”. Unfortunately, they did not play any song from “Ghost Reveries”, but they played an amazing show and I was glad I got to see them play again after so many years.
