THE 2022 NORTH AMERICAN GREAT HEATHEN TOUR

On the evening of November 12th, 2022, the Swedish melodic death metal band, Amon Amarth would perform at the Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona.

This would be the second date of their 2022 North American Great Heathen Tour. The band is touring in support of their latest album “The Great Heathen Army”, which was released on August 5th, 2022.

The extreme death metal band, Cattle Decapitation would open the show. The band is touring in support of their latest album, Death Atlas, which was released in November 2019. The band mainly performed songs from their latest album, they opened their set with “Geocide”. The band got the crowd ready for what was to come and the fans reacted positively to their fast and heavy set.

Next to perform was the death metal band, Obituary. They would open their set with “Redneck Stomp”. I had heard from people that Obituary plays very good shows, even though I did not feel they were fully connecting with the crowd this particular night. I enjoyed their set and hope to see them play a headlining set in the future.

Finally, it was time for the mighty Amon Amarth to perform. The band used Iron Maiden’s Run To The Hills as their intro song before opening up their set with their hit “Guardians of Asgaard” with the entire venue singing along to it. Lead singer, Johan Hegg really connected and kept interacting with the fans for the entire night. I like and enjoy seeing bands that move throughout the stage, which was the case with Amon Amarth. I also liked the set with big statues on each side and stairs, while drummer Jocke Wallgren played in the middle of a big Viking helmet. The band played a lot of their most popular songs like “The Pursuit of Vikings”, “Raven’s Flight”, “Destroyer of the Universe” and “The Way of Vikings”.  Really enjoy seeing the crowd participating during the song “Put Your Back Into The Oar”, while pretending they were rowing a boat. The band ended with “Twilight of the Thunder God”, which had everyone in the venue singing.

Amon Amarth shows never disappoint, if you have never seen them perform before I would recommend you check their shows out. I wish the band the best for the remainder of their tour and can’t wait to see them back soon.
